Frejgatina, Can you sea?The Mediterranean as a Political Body,
Malta Biennale 2024, The Armoury, Birgu.
March 11th – May 31st, 2024

The inagural Malta Biennale saw 80 artists hailing from 23 nations, 24 of whom are Maltese, including 2 from the Maltese diaspora, as well as over 20 national and thematic pavilions spread throughout Malta and Gozo in 21 historic sites. Busuttil was invited to create a major commission, Frejgatina.
Frejgatina reflects Busuttil's curiosity and observations of Malta—a country rich in tradition and ornate beauty, exposed to mass tourism and cultural commodification. Taking inspiration from alandscape filled with religious iconography, ‘niċċas’ and traditional tiles juxtaposed with hotels, cruise ships and souvenir shops. She borrows from these various influences alongside her lived experience in Australia to create something that resembles her conversance with the Maltese diaspora.
